Installing Replacement Windows: Learn How To Do It Yourself

It is not a secret that the financial crisis has affected several homes. However, the fact that you are on a budget does not mean that you cannot redo your home. There are some tasks that can be postponed, but there are others, like windows replacement, that just cannot wait.

If your window gets broken or damaged you need to replace it immediately to avoid being exposed to harsh weather conditions. Since hiring a contractor to do the jobs is quite expensive, it is a good idea to learn how to do it yourself. The most important step of windows replacement is planning ahead.

First of all, you need to decide what type of replacement windows you want to get. Since you need to buy brand new replacement windows, you might as well spend a bit more and get energy saving, double-insulated windows. This type of windows will save you a lot of money on your electrical bills.

Second of all, if you want to get windows which sizes are not standard, be aware that you may have to make a special order. So take that into consideration and make your order with time. Once you have your replacement window, you are ready to start working.

The first step of windows replacement is probably the most important one. Taking proper measurements is critical to get a job well done. So do it several times if necessary. If you want to get an accurate measurement, then remove the old interior trim.

If by any chance you cannot get a replacement window that measures exactly the same than the old one, go for a smaller one. It is easier to install a piece of wood on the jamb to cover the extra space, than cutting the existing frame in order to fit a larger window.

After measuring the windows, you need to remove the old window and the exterior trim. It is advisable to use a pry bar together with a wood block to avoid damaging the siding. If you plan to re-use both the interior and exterior trim, be extra careful when removing them.

Next, install the windows support, taking into account the sill slopes. Now you are ready to place the window right in the middle of the opening. You will have to use the side jambs to secure the window in place. You will notice that windows come with a set of stops. Replacing the inside stop is the next step.

Always make sure that the window is working correctly before you seal it. To do this, check it from the inside. If no modifications need to be carried out, go ahead and finish the job. The next step is getting ready to enjoy your brand new window and start thinking how you are going to use all the money that you just saved by replacing your home windows yourself.
