Installing Ceramic Tile - Avoid These Common Mistakes For Successful Tile Installation

By:

Ceramic tile is a great material for your home. With the correct information and a little practice, you can install ceramic tile yourself. Here are several common mistakes when learning to install tile.

Wrong Amount of Material

You need to accurately estimate your needs for tile, grout, adhesive, and other items before you start your project. There's nothing more frustrating than running out of tile or adhesive before the job is finished (but after you local hardware store has closed). Also, be sure you have the right tools to properly complete the installation project.

When estimating the number of tile needed, a good rule of thumb is to plan on 5-10% breakage of the tile. So, if you needed 80 tiles for a particular project, you should consider purchasing 85-90 tiles to allow for breakage or defects. When estimating adhesive and grout needs, estimate on the "high" side so that you don't run out of material before the project is finished. Don't forget that thicker tiles and wide grout joints require more material.

Improper Adhesive or Grout

Another common mistake when installing ceramic tile is using the wrong type of adhesive or grout. Be sure that the adhesive and grout you purchase for your project is proper for the type of tile you selected. Also, select the correct material if the tile is being installed in a "wet" environment.

Improper Floor Preparation

When installing new floor tile, you should first remove the old flooring material. The subfloor should be solid and easily able to support the weight of the tile. A subfloor that is not solid, may result in cracked grout as well as cracked tiles. If the old flooring material may contain asbestos, you should have the material tested before removal. If the tests indicate that the flooring material contains asbestos, be sure to hire a professional to remove the material.

Avoiding these common tile installation mistakes can get you started on a successful project.
