Installing And Changing Air Filters

Installing And Changing Air Filters

By:

Many consumers are very concerned about the quality of the air within their home. Indoor air quality can have a huge bearing on the health of in-home residents. Problems, such as allergies and asthma, can be worse if the indoor air quality is poor. One way to improve the quality of the air within your home is to install air filters in your HVAC system.

What are Air Filters?

Air filters are specially designed panels that are outfitted with a close network of fibers that pull harmful particles and impurities from the air when it passes through the mesh. Air filters can be found at any hardware or home improvement store, and installing air filters in your HVAC system is a great way to improve the quality of your indoor air. Air filters are surprisingly inexpensive, but they must be replaced on a regular basis if you want them to be efficient.

Importance of Air Filters

Air filters are incredibly important because they extend the life of your HVAC system and improve the quality of the air within your home. An air filter is capable of removing a large portion of the particles and impurities that are airborne within your home. Air is recycled in a living area, so it is very important to filter this air, or it will become saturated with impurities that can make breathing difficult.

In the outdoors, air is filtered naturally with precipitation and vegetation. However, indoor air is not filtered naturally. An air filter is required to remove particles, such as dust and dust mites from your indoor air. Without an air filter, you might notice odors coming from your duct work or an increased occurrence of respiratory issues, such as allergies and asthma symptoms. An air filter can also increase the life of your HVAC system by keeping ductwork clean and your furnace free of debris.

Change the Filter

If you truly want the air in your home to be of the highest quality, you will need to change your air filters on a regular basis. Your HVAC system usually has clear instructions that will help you change out the air filter in your system. Often, the process takes less than five minutes. It is very important, however, to purchase an air filter that is the right size and density in order to get the most use out of your filter. If you purchase an air filter that is too small, air may be able to seep around the edges of the filter without passing through the filter.

Sometimes, it is easiest to talk with your local HVAC technician so that you are getting the right filter. Another important thing to remember when you install or replace your air filters is to install it with the correct side facing the return air vent. Air filters are directional, which means that they remove particles most efficiently when air flows in a specific direction. Most air filters are printed with instructions about which side should face out when you install the filter. Changing your air filters every month will ensure that your indoor air quality is pure and healthy.
