The bathroom is often neglected when considering interior design, but it doesn't have to be that way. By turning your old shower into a stunning wetroom, you can apply the same creative vision here as in every other room in the house.

In particular a wetroom can be a real help when space is at a premium. By doing away with cumbersome shower trays they help maximise the sense of space and light giving a hum drum room a whole new added dimension. Chose your materials carefully. Smooth, but most importantly, non-slip surfaces can be very helpful if you use them in light cherry shades. You could also try adding mirrors. These reflective surfaces help give the impression of extra space even in relatively cramped surroundings.

They can work equally well for larger bathrooms. Here you can turn it into a whole new wet area, which gives the room a rather exciting and exotic look, much like a spa. If you're really looking to go the whole hog you might include a sunken bath - truly decadent.

For those who really do want to be adventurous and don't mind splashing the cash there are also a number of smart high tech options you can include. Water proof plasma screens can be fitted into the wall so you can watch the television while relaxing in the bath. You might want to plug in a few waterproofed wall speakers so you can pipe in your favourite tunes.

Some even have a number advanced shower fittings. With these you can control the flow of water remotely, so the shower can warm up while you're still getting ready. It won't do much for your water consumption, and the environmental lobby won't like it, but it still provides a real thrill for all those who are gadget minded.

However, there are some caveats. Wetrooms are great, but they can all too easily go wrong. Most important of all is ventilation. If this goes wrong then it can easily become a very uncomfortable steam room.

To make sure the whole wetroom is installed properly try to use one company rather than several on different aspects . This if you do it this way the entire operation is much more likely to fit together smoothly and with no problems. This is the most important advice of all because although wetrooms can be fantastic when they work well, they can all too easily go wrong and when that happens, they can be a real pain to put right. The secret as with so many things in life, is to take care, do your preparation and pay attention to small details.
