Install Kitchen Cabinets - Save Thousand On The Install

It would be great that by doing it yourself, you could put that extra money to work for you, such as new appliances, upgraded countertops, flooring or possibly even custom cabinets.

But, as with any home improvement project, there are some things that you will need to know if you plan on doing it yourself. I will be glad to help you along the way if you have been searching for the answer to installing kitchen cabinets on your own in that new kitchen of yours.

Now, to begin with, you are going to need some basic hand tools and power equipment to get the job done right. The tools that I am referring to is the hammer, drill, whether power or battery operated, jig saw, nail set, countersink drill bits, belt sander, table saw or even a circular saw, a two foot and four foot level and a tape measure.

Once you have determined the layout of your new kitchen, and have found the high point of the floor, then you are ready for your kitchen cabinet installation. To begin, you will want to start with the corner wall cabinet. You will want to use your stud finder to determine where the studs are located behind the wall. Now, the next step is to take those locations and tranfer them onto the backside of the cabinet, or if you would like, you can place the marks on the inside of the cabinet as well. This is where you will want to double check that the marks for the drill holes are loacted close to the top and bottom of the cabinet which is the strongest point.

Installing kitchen cabinets plumb and level is extremely important, because as you progress with the run of the cabinets, any small imperfection in the levelness of the first cabinet installed will be accentuated with each and every proceeding cabinet. You need to be extra careful here and make sure that you are installing the cabinets correctly: straight, level and plumb. You will find that if you do this, the other wall cabinets will basically fall into place alongside of the others.

You will find that your walls are not going to be perfect, and you will have to shim the wall cabinet in several areas. Again, you will find that by getting this step right, the rest of the cabintery will just be placed against the previous cabinet and screwed into place. Now, this by no means that you will not have to plumb and level the next cabinets, but you will not be faced with the problem of trying to overcome the incorrect installation of the first cabinet.

Now, in order to make the cabinets ligher and to protect the doors, I recommend that you remove them from the cabinets. If you damage a door, be prepared for a huge cost to replace it because the doors and drawer fronts of cabinets are the most expensive parts of any kitchen cabinet.
