Insect Allergies: What Insects To Avoid

By:

As the winter snow melts away and the trees and flowers creep up from the ground and bloom, allergies become one of the first things on the minds of those who are allergic to outdoor allergies such as pollen, grass, and mold. Stocking up on medications and visiting their Austin allergist they prepare themselves for the outdoor allergy season. But what many people may forget to prepare for are the many insect allergies that come with the warmer seasons. Insect bites and stings are very common during the warmer seasons of the year. It is important to know what insects may cause allergies to help protect you and your family from life-threatening reactions such as anaphylaxis which is a reaction that involves the whole body.

Avoiding insects that sting and bite are the best prevention of allergic reactions. Identifying these insects will make avoiding them much easier.

Honeybees - Ranging in color from tan with black stripes on the abdomen to nearly completely black, these bees are usually only aggressive when provoked. Honeybees usually live in hollow trees or in hanging hives.

Bumblebees - These bees are usually furry with black and yellow stripes. Bumblebees generally live in nests in hidden areas such as crevices, in walls, and in grass.

Yellow Jackets - Most are black and yellow and have distinctive markings, rather than stripes, on their bodies. Yellow jackets live in nests that can grow to be the size of a basketball by the end of a season.

Fire Ants - Millions of people are stung by fire ants each year in the United States. Though they look like the common household ant, they have certain characteristics which set them apart. Fire ants have a red-brown color on their heads and bodies, but have darker abdomens.

There are other common insects that people may find themselves allergic to. Dust mites are tiny bugs that live in house dust. Because of their size, dust mites must be seen with a microscope. Living off of skin cells shed by people, they live in warm, humid environments such as bedding, carpeting, and upholstered furniture. Another insect people are commonly allergic to is the mosquito. A female mosquito feeds on humans by biting the human skin and injecting saliva which allows the blood to flow in the mosquito's mouth.

Whether they sting or bite, these and other insects can cause allergy problems for many people. Allergic reactions can vary depending on the insect and the victim. Because reactions vary and sometimes the insect is too small or quick to be seen, it is a good idea to visit your Austin allergist or local allergist to discuss treatment and prevention options.
