Initial Information About Cervical Cancer

By:

Cervical cancer is one of the leading cancers of women in the world and even though the awareness of the Pap smear tests for early detection of cancer of the cervix is on the rise, the numbers of victims is also increasing on the other hand.

There have been many discussions going on about the vaccine for protection against cancer of the cervix and it has been reported that the vaccine used in Europe and U.S. is better than the one currently used by NHS, as its usage would result in saving of health service of million pounds. It is reported that it is better to use a vaccine which gives protection against, not only cancer but also genital warts. Though bivalent vaccines protect against two strains of HPV human papilloma virus which causes cancer of the cervix, it is always better to use quadrivalent vaccines giving a protection against four strains.

Genital warts are the most common viral sexually transmitted infection diagnosed and women from 16-19 and men from 20-24 are prone to it. This, according to healthcare experts, can be avoided with the HPV virus, used for the prevention of the cancer of cervix.

Cervical cancer, though a leading cancer, is also one of the most preventable types of cancer. This cancer can be detected when the cells of the cervix become cancerous with malignant cells. Though the awareness of screening program of Pap smear tests has decreased the cases of cancer over past 20 years, there are still cases coming up. It is estimated that there are almost 10,000 new cases each year, and almost 14 women die of this cancer each day.

Cervical cancer develops over years as the cells of the cervix undergo many changes over the years, to become abnormal and this whole process of growing differently is called dysplasia. It may go away without treatment and if it persists but is neglected, the cells may become cancerous. Sometimes there may not be any symptoms of these changes until they become severe, while sometimes the changes may result in vaginal discharge and abnormal bleeding.

The common cause for cervical cancer is the infection of the cervix with HPV. However, there are more than 80 types of HPV and 30 of these types can infect the cervix and lead to cancer. Although the infections are common, only some women develop cancer. HPV is generally spread though sexual contact. Those women who are sexually active are generally infected with HPV once in their life, but it may go away on its own. Only those who have multiple sexual partners have a greater risk of contracting infections and developing cancer.
