What is a biopsy?
Biopsy is a process wherein the sample tissue is extracted from the suspicious lump. This could be done by both non-surgical and surgical procedure. A surgical breast biopsy procedure includes taking out the sample tissue by making an incision on the skin. The entire lump might be taken out as well if it is small. The non-surgical biopsy is generally the breast needle biopsy and its procedures include core needle biopsy, vacuum-assisted breast biopsy and fine needle aspiration biopsy.
A breast biopsy can be done in hospital as well as in a clinic, depending upon the criticalness of the cancer. The doctors may use either general anesthesia or local anesthesia for surgical procedures. The medical field has improved so much, that the risks involved with such surgeries are very minimal, but ensure that you consult a specialist for this. If its a non-surgical procedure, the doctors may not use anesthesia. If the patient is feeling pain, they can take any common pain relievers.
The breast biopsy result would range from normal to abnormal. If the report is normal that would indicate that the patient is in no risk of cancer. On the other an abnormal report would mean that the lump is malignant or benign. A benign growth indicates disorders like fat necrosis, papilloma, adenofibroma and cyst. Maligant growth indicates adenocarcinoma, infiltrating ductal carcinoma, lobular carcinoma, medullary or circumscribed carcinoma, colloid carcinoma and inflammatory carcinoma. According to the biopsy reports, the doctor would recommend the further treatment that needs to be done. The patient should be careful and need to follow their doctors advices in order to be completely cured.
