Information Marketing: Acquiring New Customers

By:

One of the first things that need to be done as an information marketer starting a national association is the generation of new members to that new association. There are many ways to do this, but one of the most simple is to create a free trial membership and free plus shipping product.

Here is a question from Brian in Veil, Colorado about generating new members for a new national association. Since this is a common question, I decided to prepare an article about this challenge to help you.

In my experience, one of the quick ways to attract new customers is to set up a system of a free trial or a free plus shipping offer that customers can take advantage of when they look at your association. This system is the one that seems to work the best, or at least is the easiest hurdle to get the maximum number of customers to try your product. It incorporates the idea that you have this product that you will send to them for free and that comes with a fifteen-day trial or a thirty-day trial or a sixty-day trial with the association's membership. It could be an audio of a get started quick idea or a specific training program or anything that relates to the membership benefits. After the free trial is over, the membership begins automatically.

For the free product, it could be a DVD, audio, info booklet, whatever, it doesn't matter, but you're going to want to test different things to find the one that works the best for you. Even then, after about six months you'll need to swap it out for something else to vary the interest a bit.

One of the things I've done is have a monthly call. Having this call allows the call to be promoted in advance to all of the non-members to try to get them to join and then after the fact, the recording can be used as the free plus shipping offer for about two weeks until it's time to promote the next call. That way there is an ongoing promotion for new customers. If you have a web site template it makes it easy to just swap out what you're promoting each month.

Now, when you start buying advertising and marketing aggressively and even before you start buying, you'll want some sort of high up sell that people can buy in order to generate some fast cash. So when they get the free plus shipping offer, they get the CD you're delivering them with some great stuff. Somewhere in there, maybe not on the CD itself but maybe in the packaging or something they get about a week or two later needs to try to sell them something that costs $500 or $1,000.

Even if only ten percent of your new customers buy that product then you get $1,000 out of ten percent of the customers. With this, you will be able to do more and invest in more marketing. This way you get the cash flow going because the challenge with the free plus shipping offer is it cash flows over time. Which is a benefit because it's a small decision in order to buy but the down side is that it takes a while as a marketer to get your return of investment back on any marketing that you do.

It is very important to implement some sort of up sell quickly that works so that you can get your return of investment and you can do more marketing.

There have never been greater, more diverse, more lucrative opportunities for everyone--experienced, successful entrepreneurs to rank beginners--in the field of information marketing. If you can name a topic, there is a market for providing information about it.

People buy information about almost everything--from hobbyist topics like dog training, to business topics like how to sell over the telephone, to self-improvement topics like fitness walking. The key is to find a responsive market and then package information that customers want in convenient forms such as DVD's, books, e-books, CD's, magazines, websites, teleseminars, webinars, coaching programs, seminars, and conferences.
