Information Gathering Methods: Survey Group

By:

Research might be the foundation of marketing, but how is one to go about performing this research, and what kind of results are they going to get? One of the most in depth forms of research you can do involves using a survey group, but make no mistake, there are concerns to consider as well.

What exactly is a survey group? This is when you get together a group of people that represent your targeted audience where you can directly ask them questions about what they think. You have the ability to talk with them and have them expand on answers they give. They can ask you questions just as much as you can ask questions to them, and this ability to go back and forth allows you to expand on answers they give to find out the most information.

You can engage into brochure printing or other marketing material production to these kinds of groups in order to ask them what they think. This way you have a better way of understanding if the marketing youre doing will actually target the audience that youre hoping for. Of course, survey groups can also be put to good use before you ever start making advertising of your own, and act as a means of gathering information when your company is just starting.

Consider forming a survey group before you start up your marketing and ask them about what they think of the competitions marketing. Show sample brochures or postcards made by the competition and ask the people what they like and what they would prefer to see changed if they had a choice. With an approach like this you can be better positioned to figure out what your competitions weak spots are and figure out the best ways to improve upon them.

Now, what are the drawbacks to this kind of approach? The first is the greater costs involved with it. You have to not only gather people together but find someone to run the survey group and find a good place to hold it. All of this will cost more than you would spend just printing up surveys for people to take.

The other problem is the limited number of people you can get information from. Yes, you will get better information from each of them, but if you dont have a diverse enough crowd than you arent going to be certain that youre getting the full picture. After all, youre only getting information from people willing to take part in a survey group, and do you know that this is going to be exactly the same as what everyone else thinks?

Survey groups are best used when you need to find out a lot of information about something. You might use a survey group as your first step in your research in order to better refine your future survey methods. The survey group removes the need to interpret the data because the people are literally there to explain what they think. If you have the money for it, I would suggest at least trying to put together a survey group, and benefit from the unique information this approach grants you.
