Information For Your To Use While You Shop For Souvenirs

Travel is an experience that can broaden your horizons. One thing the majority of travelers do is collect various things from a new place as souvenirs.

Souvenir shopping goes hand in hand with travel, it's like bringing a piece of the place you visited home with you. These are a few tips to make sure you shop wisely during your travels.

One obscure bit of knowledge is that seashells are known to have been the very first souvenirs. When landing in a new place, ship captains would often gather the shells they found while traveling.

When they got back home, they would display their shells with pride, either in various curio cases or wonder chambers, which were entire rooms dedicated to housing their collection. The best souvenirs are those that allow the collector to recall and enjoy a place again in memory because of the associations the items have with the locale.

It's smart to purchase items which are associated with a certain vacation spot. Often there are objects that have been created to look like native objects but have been made elsewhere, and are not the best choice of souvenirs if you have a valuable collection to start with.

One object that comes to mind is the plastic snow globe. You can find them almost everywhere such as airport gift shops, cheap outlets, and souvenir shops, promoting almost any place.

Certainly snow globes have their own long tradition, but they aren't as good as a serious souvenir that presents the place to which you are traveling, or have traveled. A snow globe from Tampa, Florida may feature a tableau scene of citrus fruit, but I'd rather see you buy a Florida souvenir in the form of a paper label from a vintage orange crate or antique cigar box.

These bits of ephemera are more closely related to Florida's type of lifestyle, their interesting history, and their wide array of culture. You should attempt to buy souvenirs that appeal to your budget, but also are of excellent quality. The history and customs of your destination should be captured with the souvenir you buy.

Remember my motto that no matter where you roam, always negotiate. An example of this philosophy is this: imagine that you're traveling in Russia, St.

Petersburg to be specific. A good souvenir might be a matroyshka, or a Russian nesting doll.

You then try to determine, in the sea of souvenir nesting dolls, which one is the best one to buy? There are endless variations on the nesting doll, but many are mass produced. When inspecting the matroyshkas, try to find the artist's signature on the bottom, a hand-painted appearance, and a varnished surface.

You want to select a doll that has a meticulous gilt or gold leaf design and is uniformly decorated on each doll; the color schemes and scenes detailed should be analogous throughout, whether the doll depicts a historic site, a snow-scape, or rosy cheeked blond. These are the sort of things that add value to your memento.

When considering the type of souvenir to purchase, think about how you'll feel when you've returned from your travels, and imagine the type of object you'd like to have in your home to remind you of your holiday memories.

What have you discovered about your travel destination that you did not know before? It's possible that you're choosing an item which can appreciate in value and prove to be even more significant than you realize. Souvenir shopping is one way we connect with other cultures in order to bring home a little piece of a far away world.

When you travel you should be sure to pack only the clothing that you will need so that you aren't having to carry many heavy bags and suitcases. Do pack at least one item for unseasonably warm or cool weather.

Even when you're traveling to a tropical beach environment the night air can be chilled, and the indoors will definitely be air conditioned. Clothing that you can easily wash and wear multiple times is an even smarter idea.

Remember those comfortable walking shoes. Consider what you are saying about yourself with your clothing choices.

Often the clothes you choose tend to advertise you as a tourist, which can attract the attention of pickpockets or thieves. Misplaced suitcases happen quite often, and getting them back will take approximately seventy-two hours, and perhaps longer.

Also make sure that your friends and family know exactly where you are traveling to. Leave them a complete and comprehensive itinerary, not only your schedule but the addresses of the hotels at which you'll be staying and the phone numbers as well.
