India For Medical Tourism

By:

Because medical procedures in India are so cheap as compared to the prices of medical work in other countries the costs of airfares and accommodation is easily offset. Even with all costs combined, most patients leave India still having spent far less than they would have if they had attended a local clinic in their home country.

Thailand welcomes more medical tourists annually but it specialises in cosmetic treatments such as dental work, laser resurfacing, plastic surgery and gender reassignment surgeries. The clinics in Bangkok and Phuket are routinely booked out with patients having cosmetic procedures.

Not so in India, however. Medical tourism in India is used primarily by those with needs for required surgeries. Hip replacements, ye surgery, bone marrow transplants and most especially, any kind of cardiac work including bypass operations and heart transplants are performed in India.

That is not to say that cosmetic procedures are not available here. On the contrary, they are but they have yet to become the major industry that they are in Thailand. While around half a million people visit India for medical tourism each year, Thailand enjoys a medical tourism flow of over one million people annually.

It is very important that all those who travel to India for medical tourism do so with a very clear understanding of the risks involved. While the standard of medical care couldnt be higher with expertly trained doctors and nurses working in state of the art facilities in Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai, having any kind of medical work performed outside ones home country is a process that is fraught with potential problems.

Insurance policies and contracts need to be drawn up and it is absolutely essential that all necessary coverage applies. Costs for additional work or corrective surgery in the unlikely event that something goes wrong can rapidly escalate with bills of hundreds of thousands of dollars not at all uncommon.

The most popular place for medical procedures in India is tropical Chennai, in the countrys deep south. Here, patients can recuperate in clinics with wraparound bamboo balconies and receive expert attention from dedicated nurses and other clinic staff. Most drugs in India are available without prescription.

Chennai serves around half of all the medical tourism in India. It has been declared the Health Capital of the country by the Ministry of Tourism, such is the value and worth of medical tourism in India. The government happily supports and funds new facilities to encourage even more visitors from all parts of the world.

Potential patients can bear in mind that many of the worlds top doctors, professionals who work in Europe and North America, are Indian medical professionals who completed all their education and training as well as their early work years in India. Health care in India is of the highest quality.
