Incredible Engineering Design Of The Empire State Building

By:

If you have ever been to New York then there is one building that stands out more than all the others. That is of course, the Empire State Building. The building's foundations were laid in 1930, a time where technologies related to construction and engineering design did not exist. However the building was created much like modern skyscrapers are today. Here in this article we shall look at some of the engineering that was needed to create the massive American landmark we know today.

Once the building for the Empire State began it was built at an incredibly fast pace, a least four and a half storeys in one week. Considering how little technology there was available to aid this build, that rate is pretty incredible. The design of the building was engineered to be reproduced exactly as planned. There was a time where the building was one of the tallest in the world, although it is no longer, it is worth considering the poor workmen that worked at that height without safety equipment.

The Empire State Building is a four-faced building that is prepared with limestone, what makes the building unique is the curtain wall design. The wall design has now is now used for many modern high rise buildings. Ideologies at the time had an impact on the engineering design, such as industrialism, assembly lines and Labour management. The brickwork and steel that was needed for the project was prepared off site and transported to where they were then going to be utilised.

Steel would be numbered so that workers knew exactly where each piece was to fit into the building. Within eighty hours of being removed from the furnace the steel pieces would have been fitted into place. All the engineering feats that were performed during the build of the Empire State Building revealed the scrupulous planning that had been prepared before hand combined with precise completion.

Since the engineering design of the Empire State Building many lessons regarding engineering have been learnt. This has now developed the technique in which people now build high sky scraper buildings. How the Empire State Building was built, still remains to be an amazing feat. Through the dedication of the workers (desperate for paid work during The Depression) combined with the successful engineering ended up creating one of the most stunning and well known buildings in the world. Much was learnt about sky scrapers and engineering guidance since this incredible building was built.
