Increasing Home Value: Small Tasks, Big Impact

By:

You know the saying, "It's the little things that count"? Have you ever thought about it when sprucing up your home? Chances are, you may have only thought of the bigger things. But the small changes can have a huge impact on the over-all look of your home.

The small tasks below can be done over the weekend or in just a couple of minutes. You can get the family to join in on the fun too. Quick, easy, AND fun? Sounds good to me.

Plant Flowers

Bright flowers can liven up the exterior of your home very nicely. You don't need to spend a lot of money on exotic flowers; even the cheapest, low maintenance flowers will do just fine. Some suggestions are Petunias, Marigolds, Sweet Alyssum, Zinnias or Bachelor's Buttons.

Mixing in bright colors like orange, yellow, and pink give a more cheerful appearance to the home than darker purples and blues. Either is acceptable and beautiful; it depends how they will look with the exterior color of your house.

Flowers are a nice touch under windows in a flower box, on porches in clay pots, and in flower beds mixed with wood mulch. They create a warm, inviting, and friendly feel, which will make your property look well-cared for and enjoyed.

Visit your local garden center for more specific gardening tips. Some flowers grow better in certain regions and places in your yard and the associates there will be able to specify exactly what you'll need.

Replace Your House Numbers

Have you made some recent improvements to your home but forgot to update the style of your house numbers? It's ok; it's a rather small detail that would tend to slip our minds. But now that you know, you can fix them up!

If you like painting and your house numbers are carved into the exterior of your home, then this project will be great for you. All you have to do is clean out the grooves and add a little paint. Make sure it's a crisp color so the numbers can be seen from the street.

A fun way to do this is to use a sponge brush from a craft or hardware store. Just dip the sponge into a paint color that contrasts with your home and carefully apply to the grooves. When you're finished, the fresh paint will really have a big impact on the front of your home.

If you have wall-mounted house numbers you can paint them too but it may just be easier and less hassle to buy new ones. If you want to paint them, be sure to remove them from the exterior, place them on some old newspaper, and apply an even coat of spray paint.

If the numbers are worn and rusty, it's makes a lot more sense to just replace them. There are many current styles to choose from that will match any home. They're also very inexpensive.

The same goes for numbers that are on your mailbox. If they are incomplete, torn or weathered, replace them or stencil new ones onto the mailbox. It's a cheap and easy improvement to your home.

Use these fun, easy, and quick suggestions and you will see a BIG difference in the look of your home. As mentioned, they're small tasks but will greatly increase the value of your home.
