To increase the production output of the new Kia Optima the Korean company will be expanding its manufacturing plant in Georgia, USA from this September. There are four main shops at the Georgia plant, stamping, welding, paint and general assembly. There are projects underway in each of these departments in order to raise annual production to 360,000 per annum.

Kias best selling model in the US is the Kia Sorento, a 4x4 SUV;sales of the Sorento rose by 46% in May. At the end of 2010 the 100,000th Sorento was sold in the US, making it the first US built Kia to pass that milestone. The new Kia Optima will be built alongside the Sorento at the Georgia car plant. With the expansion, 1000 new team members have been hired in preparation for the addition of a third shift, which begins later this month, and increases the total number of jobs at the plant to over 3000.

Byung Mo Ahn, Group President and CEO of Kia Motors America and KMMG said, "The success of the West Point, Georgia plant is the result of the dedication of our team members and the world-class quality that goes into each vehicle we build, the increased volume and addition of new team members is further evidence of our commitment to the U.S. and local economies."

Projects currently in action at the plant include:

A second 5,400-ton transfer press is being installed in the stamping shop.
Additional robots are being added to the welding shop.
The size of the paint shop is being increased to accommodate the complexities involved with producing a third model and selling Kia parts online.
The production line is being extended within the existing facilities and new equipment will be installed inside the general assembly shop.
The railroad spur is being expanded to efficiently handle the additional volume.
More than 500 additional parking spaces are being added in the team member parking area to accomodate additional staff.

Kia and fellow South Korean automaker Hyundai are the fastest growing car manufacturers in the US this year to date, Kias US sales increased by 53percent in May from May 2010. Hyundai also plan to increase production in the US and plan to sell 600,000 cars and vans in the US by the end of the year.
