Increased Efficiency In Manufacturing Procedure Cuts Costs

By:

For most of the 20th century, United States manufacturing dominated the world. The label that proudly declared "Made in America" stood for quality and innovation, words that were respected throughout the world. A strong middle class was also built by American manufacturing. The manufacturing base generated high-paying jobs that supported generations of families as well as a growing and robust economy while providing the material needs for Americans and the world.

Today, it's no secret that most of the manufacturing interests in the United States have outsourced operations to other countries. To demonstrate, manufacturing accounted for 53 percent of the U.S. economy in 1965, decreased to 39 percent in 1988, but made up only 9 percent in 2004. Globalization has resulted in a dramatic increase in the mobility of goods, labor, capital, and technology world-wide putting unprecedented pressure on American manufacturing companies. In order to compete in the global market, companies have to make the choices of how and where to cut costs or go bankrupt as they try to compete with the low cost of labor in other countries and resulting lower cost of goods so in demand from the American public. Most have opted to relocate their operations and outsource those formerly American held jobs in order to stay competitive. This also means exporting American technology that allows other countries to gain the knowledge without expending the resources.

For the remaining U.S. manufacturing companies to keep their operations in the country while staying competitive in the global market today, increased automation and maximum efficiency is required to reduce overhead costs. Manufacturing and distribution processes must be streamlined to eliminate inefficient manufacturing procedures that require larger payroll and operating expenses. Workplace accidents and illnesses must be reduced by creating safer environments to lower workman's compensation costs. Energy efficiency must be maximized to control utility costs. Processes and procedures must produce product quality and customer service that meet or exceed the needs of customers to reduce customer complaints and losses.

American innovation is still the best in the world with automation technology growing and improving at an amazing level. Automation consultants who keep abreast of the latest technology and applications combine their extensive knowledge of plant engineering, processing, and materials handling into practical reengineering solutions that can cut operating costs significantly to improve the bottom line. Such procedure design solutions that improve efficiency and reduce overhead costs help to keep American manufacturing - and jobs - in America.
