1. A Longer Muscle Contraction - When your muscles are able to completely contract they can exert more force. Inflexibility will hinder a person's maximal power output because their muscles will not be able to flex to their full capacity. If you are flexible your muscles will contract with less resistance, which will also give you more body control and strength development.

2. Preventing Injury - One of the main reasons that a person develops jumper's knee is because there is a lot of stress on their quad muscle, which is caused by stiff hamstrings. It is important that you perform exercises that work the entire body. This will keep one muscle group from overcompensating for another. If you stretch one muscle group, make sure to stretch the opposing muscle as well to keep a balance. Becoming flexible will help prevent many injuries.

3. A Complete Range Of Motion - Ok, we are going to use an example of a boxer to understand this idea. Let's imagine a boxer that is only able to extend his rotator cuff halfway. This will severely effect the force of his punch because he will not be able to reach all the way back to generate his full power. Having complete control of our range of motion is an important factor when you are training your vertical leap. It will allow you to extend farther and improve your form. Science has shown that simply changing your jumping form and implementing the correct techniques can add inches to your vertical immediately.

A muscle can be stretched either passively or actively. Each of these types of stretching affects different parts of the muscle. When a muscle is stretched passively, the muscle is relaxed, and the portion of the muscle being worked is the connective tissue surrounding the muscle. When a muscle is stretched actively, the muscle is contracted; the portions of the muscle being stretched are the tendon and other tissues.
