Incontinence products used to be something that people were afraid or embarrassed to speak about. Luckily as the average life span of people on the planet has increased so too has the openness about some of the incontinence problems that are occasionally inevitable with age. In the past people cowered at the idea of developing even mild incontinence. It was obviously a lousy inconvenience and not something anyone would wish on their loved ones but it was a reality and facing reality is important.

Often the availability of advertising materials regarding an ailment are a good indicator of where that lies on the table of conversations. Similarly a woman's menstrual cycle used to be an abhorrent unspeakable secret. Now you can see a commercial for femine hygiene products on the television at most times of day. Erectile dysfunction was for a time a taboo thing to bring up, but as science made inroads to fixing it so to did advertisers help make inroads to discussing it.

I have had the experience recently of meeting several familial friends who publicly admitted to needing to wear adult diapers in order to play a full eighteen holes of golf. That is the other great thing about the wide availability and easy discussion of incontinence products. The increase in activity for folks now living through their incontinence is overall incredibly healthy for their minds and bodies. Rather than be stuck at home bound to a bed afraid of their next bowel movement the incontinent can now go out and live a far closer version of their normal life. Certainly there is a lot to adjust about one's behavior but gone are the days of assuming any and all activity is to stop when incontinence becomes a part of one's life.

I am so happy that by the time I am an elderly man there will be some healthy options to deal with the problems of incontinence. From disposable underwear to adult diapers there are ways to live a fairly normal life. Even more pleasant is that much of the stigma associated with these medical problems will have been eroded. We are definitely moving in a positive direction towards active people who are well into their elderly years. It's good for us all.
