In Memory Of The Berlin Wall Victims A Total Of 136 From 1961 To 1989

The Berlin Wall was built on the 13th August 1961. On this day nobody had any idea of the consequences for the citizens of Berlin and for all of East Germany, whose people were pro-freedom and against the political restrictions of the former German Democratic regime. The events that followed would change the thoughts and insights of the people. The first Berlin Wall victim, Gnter Litfin, was shot 11 days after the building of the Berlin Wall. Many other victims would follow.

The so-called Wall victims or "Wall dead" were divided into 5 groups, according to the circumstances in which they lost their lives. People who wanted to escape and were killed by the border guards along the Berlin Wall in the former GDR; people who died as a result of an escape attempt, because they drowned, fell or had a heart attack; people who were wrongly thought to be making an escape attempt and were shot by East German border guards also West Berliners, relatives of the GDR border troops, who were killed, and people who died through the actions of the border troops after controls and searches were carried out.

All in all the number of victims that died in the death strip along the Berlin Wall comes to at least 136 between the years 1961 and 1989. The real number could be much higher than this. The GDR regime tried to suppress a lot of terrible incidents that took place within the death strips. But one thing is clear, at the inter-German border over 1,000 died in attempts to escape to the other side. Women and men, pensioners and children lost their lives. The youngest victim was a 15 month old baby, who lay coddled in a blanket in the car of its parents as they tried to escape. Chris Gueffroy, the last victim of the Berlin Wall, was killed in February 1989 with 10 bullets. His grave was desecrated. Today a freedom memorial near to Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin Mitte remembers all the victims of the Berlin Wall and the inter-German border. For all the citizens, for all the people brave enough to try to escape and who lost their lives along the border, may you rest in peace!
