the nettle belongs to the species of flowering plants of the genus called as urtica of the family urticaceae .


Consumers should know that they are commonly known as herbaceous perennial plants, some of nettle plants are grown annual and few of them are grown shrubby. Consumers of nettle should know that the most active member of the genus is called stinging nettle Urtica dioica. Mostly nettle is found in many nations such as Europe, north Africa, Asia, and North America. Genus of nettle contains number of many other species having similar properties in their family list .



Many species of nettle family share the property such as having stinging hairs along with having similar medicinal usages for the consumers . The stings of Urtica ferox called as ongaonga or tree nettle of New Zealand is found to be poisonous killing both animals and human beings such as horses, dogs and people . Consumers of nettle will find it very surprising that nature of the toxin secreted by nettles is still unsettled. Readers of nettle species should know that stinging hairs contains formic acid, serotonin, and histamine. But many studies of Urtica thunbergiana containing oxalic acid and tartaric acid than any other those substances .


Some of the members of family Urticaceae also known as nettles which do not belongs to the members of the genus Urtica. Some of them are the wood nettle Laportea canadensis, mostly found in North America between Nova Scotia to Florida and also the false nettle Boehmeria cylindrica, found in United States and many other several nations. As the name reflects the false nettle is not considered as sting. Consumers can go through stinging nettle for medicinal, food and many other usages . Historical evidence of usages of nettles in medicine, folk remedies, cooking and fiber production are related to one particular species named as Urtica dioica. So in this way users of nettle should not think that all nettles is having alike properties. Some of the fresh leaves may cause painful stings along with acute urticaria which are harmful . Not only this most species of nettles are quite safer and few of them are consumed as vegetables after getting steamed for daily purposes.
