Implementing Redirect Pages

By:

The effect of redirect pages on your search engine rankings is one of the most important aspect that you should be aware of. How your site is treated by a search engine is affected by the type of redirect that you use. Permanent and temporary are the 2 types of redirect pages. The one you're going to use has very big implications to your site ranking.

Most commonly used redirect pages are:

1. 301 Redirect: The 301 redirect is a permanent redirect page. The page appears to users as they are redirected from one website to another or from one webpage to another. The original page that is no longer available will be removed within a few weeks when 301 redirects are used.

2. 302 Redirect: The 302 redirect is a temporary redirect page. The page will be displayed to users as they are redirected from one website to another. The original page is shown as unavailable and will only go back as soon as the 302 redirect is removed.

3. 404 error pages: Users get redirected to a page that says "The page is no longer available, please check the URL and try again or use the refresh button on your browser."

Each redirect number should be used under different circumstances. The confusion with the redirect numbers comes in when web-site owners try to use the wrong code for the wrong reasons. Some website designers have decided that creating custom redirect pages is a good way to improve the SEO on their site, but unfortunately this doesn't always work the way it should. What happens is that the custom redirect page does not provide the proper redirect number to the search engine crawler.

For SEO purposes, use redirect pages in a manner which they are meant to be used because using them in any other way will be a risk for your search engine rankings.
