In normal circumstances, you would not have given a second though to the question of whether you should replace COBRA insurance with private health insurance or not. However, with the economic recession leading to layoffs all over the world, the question of managing your health insurance in the event of a layoff has become very important.

Once a person is laid off, he or she is filled with worries about making ends meet and managing expenses. In such a scenario, one finds it difficult to give serious thought to the issue of health coverage. Health insurance just seems like a provision for a future contingency and is ignored due to presence of other more important problems. - COBRA insurance will not last for more than eighteen months. In certain cases, it may be extended. However, you can rest assured that it is not a long term option.
- The coverage offered by COBRA insurance cannot be described as the best deal of them all. If you suffer from a long term medical condition when you are covered, not only could you be refused protection but you will also find it difficult to get private health insurance due to your pre-existing medical condition.

The only justification stated in favor of COBRA insurance is that group insurance premium often works out cheaper than private health premium. However, this is not always true. Affordable health insurance is available for those who are ready to put in some effort to find it. There are many web sites which offer online quotes to assist the individual to find the right policy. There are many insurers who cover pre-existing medical conditions as well. In this regard, Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance is best. If you are in search of Michigan health insurance, you need not look beyond BCBS.

The only reason to continue with COBRA insurance is if you are certain that you will be denied health coverage due to your poor health condition. However, there are many insurers who are ready to be flexible in this regard. You will at least be certain of insurance coverage for all ailments other than those related to your existing condition.

Hence, in the unfortunate event of a sudden loss of job, do not make the mistake of blindly opting for COBRA insurance. If you have already chosen it, recognize that it is time to replace it with affordable private health coverage.
