In a time when it makes sense to stay in your existing house instead of going through the hassle and expense of selling, one of the strategies you can employ to improve your current home is to renovate a bathroom or the kitchen. Doing so not only increases your enjoyment of your home, but kitchen and bathroom upgrades are proven to add to the resale value of your house should you decide to consider selling it in the future.
While the large scale items tend to take center stage during a renovation product -things like moving walls, electrical and plumbing infrastructure- its important to pay attention to the smaller details as well. Take fixtures, for example. Selecting high quality fixtures to accessorize your bathroom or kitchen will pay off when the project is complete and you are able to appreciate the sense of finished elegance they add to the room. Id recommend looking into a manufacturer like
Whitehaus . This company offers both contemporary and traditional designs in fixtures such as sinks, faucets and matching accessories like towel bars, hooks and paper dispensers. The selection of styles and finishes is diverse and build quality is extremely high; once youve seen products of this caliber, youll quickly lose interest in the mass produced versions carried in department stores and big box retailers.
At a recent Home Show, I ran into popular designer Wendy Osborne and asked her what, if anything, people regret about undertaking a kitchen or bathroom reno. Without a doubt, the biggest regret is choosing cheap fixtures, Osborne said. I dont know how many times Ive run into the scenario where the home owner tries to save money on a standard kitchen sink and fixtures, for example, but pays a premium price for granite countertops. When its all completed and they see the finished room for the first time, guess what? They realize it looks thrown together and cheap and demand that I rip it apart and replace the fixtures. If theyd picked high quality fixtures in the first place, like I suggested, we would have been on time and on budget.
I couldnt agree more. And might I add that quality fixtures are also less likely to fail, so you arent paying to repair or even replace them in a year when your kid twists the handle off or the washers are shot.
