If You Thought There Was No Place Like Home Try Storage Sheds

By:

Having a garden building needn't just be about storing a lawn mower and few half used tins of paint. In fact, storage sheds have become somewhat of a cult niche, with annual competitions for the best sheds made by keen crafts people. Whether you want to build a shed to use as an art studio, a garden office or for somewhere to retreat for a bit of peace and quiet, there are some easy to follow steps to make a veritable garden palace.

When purchasing a shed make sure that you choose one that is big enough for the use you wish to put it to as there is nothing more frustrating than erecting a garden building that ends up being too small for the job. If there is furniture you want to put in, measure everything up first, and make sure that the door is big enough to get it all in. If you plan to have delicate furnishings or electrical items, then an insulated shed is the best option.

Many insulated storage sheds are more like homes than garden buildings, with a full power supply, glazed windows, tiled roof and guttering. These make perfect offices for freelance writers, designers and therapists. Being able to have a working space that is outside the home means that it is easier to concentrate on being at work, without getting distracted by chores that need doing or social visits from family, friends and neighbours.

To create the perfect atmosphere, choose practical yet comfortable flooring. If you are going to be making a mess with art materials, choose a tiled floor, or a cushioned vinyl floor; both are easy to clean, and look good too. If you are looking for a little more comfort choose industrial grade carpeting as regular carpets will attract dirt far more easily, and people do not tend to take shoes off when arriving at storage sheds! If you really feel like pushing the boat out, go for some real hardwood flooring as it is easy to maintain once it has been laid and varnished.

Whether or not you plan to keep items of value in your shed, ensure that you install curtains or blinds. This not only gives a little privacy, but it prevents anyone being able to see what is in your space when you are not there. For added security and to deter thieves, have a proper lock fitted as a padlock is easy picking for an opportunist who thinks there might be something of worth inside.

Finally, make sure that any electrical work is done by a qualified electrician, just running an extension cord from the house can be an hazard, and it can mean that your storage shed is vulnerable to thieves if you need to leave a window open for the cord.
