Lubbock is supplied with water through the water distribution lines connected to water reservoirs present all over the city. Vertical standpipes which held water were used prior to the arrival of the water tanks. These standpipes still contain water so they do not get knocked over by strong gusts of wind.

The water towers were selected to maintain pressure in the water lines over the old standpipes. These old storage tanks will be broken up and each part will be sold as scrap metal, according to the administrator.

The main station makes use of an old tank by turning it into storage for treated water to power the building's air conditioning systems and boiler rooms.

Oil is used to protect the inner lining of these tanks. An electrical field is maintained constantly in the water to prevent against oxidation or rust.

The water tanks are looked after by an out of state firm contracted by the city of Lubbock. Even minor damages on the tanks are repaired immediately, normally found after careful inspection of the tanks.

The water tanks do not set off. The overflow outlet present in the tank leads excess water down a pipe and onto the ground. The control room is manned 24 hours a day so when a problems like increased water pressure and insufficient water demand occurs, the employees are alerted.

Consequently, the workers lower the number of pumps that work in the pumping station. Whatever purpose they may serve, these tanks break the humdrum picture of endless flat plains and telephone poles in the city.

A number of these tanks have been present ever since the city was born. The others sustain Lubbock's thriving population within the water system. Whether an obsolete steam engine or a thirsty employee, each tank offers the water needed to survive.
