If this does indeed need to happen, several people begin asking if their rankings in the search engines will be affected. However, for people who have an internet marketing blog that has made its way to the front page, it's hard to let that go and to go back to being unseen. However, here are a few tips to consider when it comes to switching servers and how they affect or don't affect your SEO rankings.

On the up side, there are a few different methods to try in order to give you the ability to switch servers and not have anything happen with your SEO ranking. There additionally are a few things that you can do to better help you save your rank in search engines while dealing with a server switch.

One of the most essential things to make sure of is that there is little to no down time on your website while you are going through the switch. This however is assuming that things such as your site name as well as the elements on your site are remaining as they are and not changing. By having a short amount of downtime to your website, you are helping to keep your rankings the same without causing too much damage to them. Your ranking aren't going to be affected much as long as you are back up and running in a fast time frame, and even if you have a spider hit your page and see that it's not there, your site should be up and running again by the time the second hit comes around.

Additionally, consider leaving all files on the old server for a certain time frame and this can help to mitigate damage to rankings if you take them down too fast. Consider a few weeks to at least a month.

Overall, if you simply switch to another server, there should not be too much damage as far as your rankings are concerned. If you have an internet marketing blog, maybe tell readers about the switch so they can be prepared. Whatever you do, never switch both your URL and a server at one time.
