Fees and surcharges are a part of how courier companies create their invoicing totals. The fee that you pay will be partly to cover the cost of their services used delivering the package back to your address.

If the package is actually delivered the wrong address, the problem gets a little worse. The courier company will almost certainly spend some time and resources trying to retrieve the package for you. Failing that, they will have to put an insurance claim on the package. Both of these are expensive, and since the mistake was caused by your error, that cost will be passed along to you.

This might sound a bit intimidating, but the great news is that most courier companies are going to have ways to help you avoid this mistake. You should use tools like the online address book that they provide you with, because it will often be equipped with features like address verification, which will flag any address that is not a valid US address. Together, those two features alone can keep you from making this mistake most of the time.
