Identifying And Curing Eye Infections

By:

When one or both of the eyes become infected it can be an incredibly uncomfortable situation, to say the least. When either a virus, germ or bacteria finds a way into the eye an infection is usually the result. Nobody is immune to eye infections, it affects people of all ages. The most vulnerable are those who have a compromised immune system. Be careful around family and friends, if you happen to get one, because they can be very contagious.

There are many different types of eye infections. The most common are styes, pink eye and blepharitis. Styes occurs in the oil glands that reside at the edge of the eyelids.

I am going to list some of the common symptoms of an eye infection so you know what to look out for: Flaky skin around the eyes, itchiness, eye inflammation, discomfort, pain, discharge (might become crusty after sleeping), swelling, tears, redness and blurry vision. If you have one or several of these symptoms then it is wise to see an optometrist as soon as possible.

Germs, viruses and bacteria constantly come into contact with our eyes. Our defenses typically have no problem dealing with these unwanted invaders. An eye infection occurs when the body's defenses fail. Hand to eye contact, bad eye hygiene and infections traveling through the sinuses to the eyes are usually the cause of eye infections. If you wear contacts then it is critical to take care of your eyes. Many infections occur because of poor contact lens hygiene. Less common causes for an eye infection include eye surgery complications, illness, trauma to the eye or an immune deficiency disorder (such as AIDS).

Some eye infections are harmless while others can be extremely serious. If you do not get to the doctor soon enough it is possible to lose some of your vision. The doctor is likely to prescribe some type of topical solution and antibiotic eye drops. Make sure that you know the side effects of the medication you doctor prescribes. Some of these drugs can cause further complications, such as dry eyes.

There are also a number of herbal remedies that can speed your recovery and prevent a reoccurence of an existing eye infection. Bilberry is one of the most popular and it is known for it's ability to strengthen the capillaries in the eyes and heal a variety of eye conditions. It also works to prevent infections and diseases. Roobios and Sutherlandia Frutescens are powerful anti oxidants that help to ensure that your eyes are getting plenty of nutrients, blood and oxygen. This is essential to ensure that you heal quickly.
