Ideas For Teaching Children About Money

By:

The task of teaching children about money should begin when the children are young. Kids as young as five years old can begin to do small tasks around the home for a small allowance. As they get older they can be given more responsible tasks to perform. In the beginning they can be charged with weeding or watering the garden.

If the child is still young and unable to read, parents can create a chart with pictures depicting each task. The child will then be able to see what needs to be done by looking at the pictures on the chart. The allowance should only be given to the child once all the daily tasks are completed, as this will create a sense of responsibility.

Each weekend parents can then teach the kids how to manage their earnings by splitting it up into three piles. Three boxes, bottles or tins can be used for this purpose. The cash will be placed into the following categories, personal use, savings and charity.

Kids need to learn about the value of earning cash and the best way to do this is by saving. When kids buy something with their own money that they have saved up themselves they truly appreciate the value of that particular item. For small kids it could be a particular toy and older kids may have their eye on a computer or motor car.

There are valuable life lessons to be learned from being charitable. Apart from learning to have compassion, kids will learn to be appreciative of what they have. Kids should be allowed to consider charities and choose one that touches their hearts. They should understand where their money is going, what it is used for and how it helps those in need.

When kids become a bit older they can be shown how to open up a bank account. Tax education can become part of the process of teaching children about money. Developing these habits early on in life is a great way to create a generation of people who master resources instead of resources mastering them.
