Ideas For Saving Money While You Attend College

By:

Many people save money for years so that they can attend college, but then forget about saving money once they get there. Whether you are working and want to save as much cash as possible, or are living off your dwindling savings, you should consider a few tips to save funds during your school years. This may help you end up leaving school with some money put away in an account, or at least with very little debt aside from student loans.

Books are quite expensive in college, as they end up costing a few hundred dollars per semester. That means that over the years, you will end up spending thousands of dollars on this item. Fortunately, saving money on books is definitely possible. Start with trying to buy used books; just know that most student bookstores only have a limited amount of used books since everyone wants them, so go early in the semester to buy your books. You are also usually allowed to sell them back to the store, which lets you get back at least a portion of your money. If they do not need anymore of the books you have, you can sell them online to other students, or even to other bookstores off-campus. You may even be able to get books for free by sharing them with classmate who is a friend, as you will probably end up studying with them anyway.

Another tip for saving money in college is to avoid signing up for student credit cards. These tend to have high interest rates since few people extend credit to students, unless they stand to make a profit. Of course, you will not waste money unless you actually put a balance on the card, but few people seem to be able to avoid the temptation. Unless you have the resolve to use it occasionally and pay off the balance every month, pay cash for things you need instead. You can always build credit later in other ways.

Saving money requires managing it well, which you can do by signing up for a credit union. This type of organization tends to have high interest rates available for savings accounts, and the lowest rates in the industry for credit cards. Members are said to own a small piece of the credit union, rather than just being a customer, so expect great service here, as well. Once you have been a member for a few years, it should be easy to sign up for a credit card with low interest, allowing you to build your credit without ridiculously high rates.

These are just a few tips for saving money while in college. Most people have little extra to spend during their school years, which makes these tips particularly valuable. Consider these ideas so that you can stay as far out of debt as possible before you graduate.
