Ideal Candidates For Breast Implant Surgery: Reviewing Candidacy Factors

By:

Breast augmentation may be one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, but it's not for everyone. There are many important considerations when determining whether breast augmentation surgery is right for you.

Ideal candidates for breast augmentation are adults who wish to enlarge their breasts for personal reasons. Teenagers are not good candidates because the breasts often continue to develop into the early twenties. Ideal candidates have realistic expectations for the outcome of breast augmentation. Those who are not good candidates for breast augmentation include those with unrealistic expectations or those who feel pressured into this procedure by others. The decision to have breast augmentation should not be made lightly.

Although breast implants do not usually interfere with childbearing or breastfeeding, many surgeons recommend waiting to undergo this procedure until you are fairly certain that you are not going to have any more children. Pregnancy can affect the appearance of the breasts; as a result, you may wish to undergo revision surgery following pregnancy. In fact, many women choose to have their first breast augmentation surgery after the birth of their children because of how pregnancy and breastfeeding have affected the appearance of their breasts. Women may not undergo breast augmentation if they are currently pregnant or breastfeeding

Women who choose to undergo breast augmentation do so for reasons that are varied, unique, and personal. Most patients undergo breast augmentation because they feel that their breasts are disproportionately smaller than their body. Breast augmentation is also a popular procedure following significant weight loss or aging, both of which can result in loss of breast volume or size. Breast augmentation can also be used to correct uneven or asymmetrical breasts, either occurring naturally or after mastectomy.

Ideal candidates for breast augmentation are adult women in overall good health. An active infection anywhere on the body, or malignant or pre-malignant breast cancer, will disqualify patients from undergoing breast augmentation.
