Ice Storms Cause Havoc When They Are Frozen And After They Turn Into Water

By:

In many states they have ice storms and they can get very bad in just a short time after it starts. The ice forms all over everything and it can be a thick coat or a thin coat depending on the storm. It causes damage, thousands of thousands of dollars of damage and it can not be stopped. Every years there is a bad ice storm somewhere. People lose power, trees get coated thick with ice, and when roads get covered with ice, it makes traveling in most vehicles almost impossible.

Ice damage can stick around even after the ice has melted. Power lines must be repaired and tree debris has to be removed. It can also cause damage to homes by coating around the windows which can cause the them to break or cause caulking to deteriorate allowing water to get inside. It can cause water damage to the roof when the ice freezes, melts somewhat, and then refreezes at night when the temperatures drops again. This is what is known as ice dams and when they linger for days, it can cause rotting to the wood around the gutters and edges of the roof.

Ice can snap power lines which can cause sparks to shoot all over the place and when live wires land on the roadways it can cause accidence with cars. If there is an ice storm coming, you need to get some place safe and you need to have an emergency kit handy. You need to have a flash light and batteries in there, with food and water, extra clothes to keep you warm, and a radio. It is good to have this just in case a storm like this hits your area. It can happen over night so just watch out and watch the news to keep informed. It can also leave water damage after the ice melts and it can cause floods.

Many people have that problem after the ice melts. Their yards can be covered in water. When the power goes out, it can be days or in extreme cases, even weeks before it is restored. This can mean no way to cook, stay warm, watch television, or use a computer. If you know ahead of time that there is an ice storm coming and you live in a remote area, it might be wise to go and stay with family or friends closer in a residential area just in case you lose power. Remote areas are usually the last to have power restored and once the ice storm hits, you could be stranded there with no way out until the thaw comes. When you live in a remote place, it is good to have a generator and plenty of fuel on hand because ice storms can come unexpectedly sometimes.
