Ice Fishing Unrecognized Winter Sport By Many

By:

There are many fishermen who have never tried ice fishing. They know nothing other than what goes on at the lake in the summer. However more and more anglers are discovering a complete other world when the temperature drops. Ice fishing is a great family sport. It is inexpensive, easy and a great way to spend time with the family and have fun.

There are a few things you need to keep in mind when planning your ice fishing trip. Dress warm, ice fishing takes place in the open and the chilly temperatures and possibly a breeze tends to make it a little difficult to stay warm. Wear lots of layers under a wind proof jacket and it is nice if the jacket is waterproof also.

If the weather turns out to be warmer than expected or the air is calm you can always take off a few layers if needed. It is better to have to many clothes on and remove some rather not have enough and be uncomfortable Remember you will be playing in cold water. Boots waterproof gloves and a good hat are needed also.

The reflection off the snow and ice can make it difficult to see and it is very hard on the eyes , so a good pair of sunglasses are a must and do not forget the sun block or you may end up with a burned face.

There is not a lot of equipment involved in ice fishing. You may decide to use an outfitter, as they will provide every thing you need from drilled holes, lines and bait.
In my opinion this is the way to go , but if you had rather have your own equipment I would try the sport a few times to make sure you really like it before going out and buying everything.

If you decide to purchase your equipment you can expect to pay from $300 to $600 or more depending on the type of equipment you buy.

Safety is important to remember also. The recommended thickness of ice for walking is at least 6 inches and if you plan to take your car on the ice the recommended thickness is more than 10 inches. Remember to never drive fast on ice. The ice is flexible and a pocket of air is created in front of your vehicle. If you go to fast you can drive over the bubble of air and with no water under the ice for support it may break through from the weight of your vehicle.

Following these tips will help to ensure you and your family are safe, warm and have a great time.
