I Need To Lose Weight: Where Should I Start

By:

The number of people being diagnosed as obese continues to increase. This is happening not only in western countries but also in some underdeveloped countries. Health problems associated with obesity are putting a huge strain on health systems all around the world. There are many things which can lead to obesity including:

- Stress
- Poor diet
- Lack of exercise

People who are at a healthy weight for their height naturally tend towards a more active lifestyle than overweight people. Inactivity is one of the main reasons for obesity, next to diet. You really need to get up and move if you want to return to a healthy weight. If you have come to the realization that you need to do something about your problem and need help losing weight, the next question is likely to be exactly what that something might be.

Most of us understand the link between food and putting on weight. If you eat bigger portions than you need to, or you eat several helpings instead of just eating one it should be no surprise to you that you have gained weight.

The thing a lot of people do not seem to understand is the link between inactivity and weight gain. As you age your metabolism has a tendency to slow down, making it even more important to stay active. When your metabolism slows down your body burns less calories. One of the difficulties of this is that it takes more activity to burn the same amount of calories. If you eat the same way as when you were younger but fail to stay active the net result will be that you will tend to gain weight.

How do you manage your weight?

Weight management consists of the following things:

- Proper diet
- Physical exercise
- Psychological retraining

Your diet and exercise needs to be a part of your lifestyle, but if you take care of the last part, the psychological component, you will find that the other parts of the equation will naturally fall into place.

If you can retrain the way you think about food, you should naturally tend to eat smaller meals, as well as opting for healthy foods like fruits, vegetables and lean protein. You also need to drink plenty of water. Your body needs water to function as it helps to circulate nutrients and keep you hydrated. Quite simply, if you do not drink enough water your body will not be working at its best and this will slow your weight loss efforts.

You Need to Get Up and Move!

When you think of physical activity you might automatically assume that you have to break into a sweat for it to count, but this is simply not true. To begin with moving is all that is required. In fact if you have not done much with your body in a month of Sundays you should ease into it slowly. Walking is an excellent way to get started. A good idea is to somehow fit it into your daily schedule, by walking somewhere that you would normally drive, for example. This way it will seem like less of a chore.

If you follow this advice and take care of the three aspects necessary for safe and healthy weight loss, you will be well on your way to a longer more enjoyable life.
