I Love Touring Rome, Italy - Trastevere District Hotels

By:

The Trastevere district whose name means "across the Tiber", is one of the most authentic areas of Rome. It has a village atmosphere and a great nightlife attracting both Romans and tourists. The Janiculum hill provides a great view of Rome across the river. Get there at sunset and don't miss the Janiculum lighthouse, a century-old gift to Rome from Italians in Argentina. Local churches include Santa Maria in Trastevere, originally built in the Third Century, and the Fifteenth Century San Pietro in Montorio, according to legend, the site of Saint Peter's crucifixion. The Farnesina Villa boasts frescoes by Peruzzi and Raphael and his pupils. The Palazzo Corsini was built in the early Sixteenth Century for a cardinal who may have forgotten his vows of poverty. It now houses the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica that includes paintings by Rubens, Van Dyck, Caravaggio, and others. Right nearby you will find Rome's Botanical Gardens with 7,000 plant species from all over the world. For your convenience we have listed neighborhood hotels in approximate order of cost, starting with the least expensive. We have personally verified all website addresses making sure that they include English-language pages.

The recently renovated Hotel Trastevere manages to provide the village-like charm of this neighborhood. Most of its rooms face the Piazza San Cosimato that hosts an outdoor food market six mornings a week. There are 19 rooms and three apartments, each of which can accompany up to five people on three levels. On the downside, the rooms do not have Internet access. The address is Via Luciano Manara n 24a/25 00153 - Rome.

Relais Le Clarisse is a small townhouse suite located on the ground floor of an Eighteenth Century building with a lovely courtyard. It's a short walk from the Santa Maria in Trastevere Church. There are only five rooms so if you are interested you should reserve early. All rooms face the courtyard where breakfast is served, weather permitting. Try for the Rose suite that has its own vestibule and tall, vaulted ceilings. The address is Via Cardinale Merry del Val 20 - 00153 Rome.

The Grand Hotel del Gianicolo is a new 4 star Hotel located in a historic 18th Century villa sitting on the historic Gianicolo hill once the main stronghold of the heroic Roman republic defending the city from foreign troops. It has 3 floors and includes facilities for the handicapped. There is a pool ensconced within a garden, and a roof garden. The hotel includes facilities for meetings. Choose your dates carefully; rates may vary sharply from one day to the next. The address is Viale delle Mura Gianicolensi, 107 - 00152 - Rome.

Hotel Donna Camilla Savelli is located in a restored Seventeenth Century convent built for a noble family. The roof garden includes a Baroque fountain. Its rooms were once convent cells and every room is unique. This non-smoking property includes access for the disabled, a bar, and a lounge bar. Parking is free. The address is Via Garibaldi, 27 - 00153 - Rome.

As you can see, the Trastevere district is a good place to tour on your next trip to Rome. You may even want to stay there.
