I Love New York: Five Great Films About A Great City On Satellite Tv

Whether being immortalized on the silver screen or on vinyl, New York City is known for its ability to inspire awe and wonder in artists. There is hardly a city out there that has so many loving tributes devoted to it, and considering the fact that every plane and bus that arrives in Manhattan brings a crop of hungrier, prettier, younger, and more talented aspiring native New Yorkers, it's one of the most fiercely competitive islands on the face of the earth. No wonder then, that it's so easy to feel alone roaming the streets of Manhattan--or that so many people who fall in love with its concrete skyline on the silver screen end up not being able to hack it in the real-life. Whether you're planning a move to the Big Apple or just hoping to fall in love with it all over again on your HDTV set, here are five great films about one of the greatest cities on the planet.

Fame. Before there were performing arts high schools across the country out there to make creative children feel a little bit better, there was this film, which managed to present the impression that it was possible to sing or dance one's way to freedom from normal parents and a conventional lifestyle. With remakes in the works that will likely purify the original's more edgy moments, this is a true New York classic designed to be seen again and again. Worth tuning into satellite tv simply for the scene where they head to see "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."

West Side Story. While not every movie about New York has to focus on song and dance numbers, this is one of those stories that is just worth watching, even if you're not particularly inclined towards musicals. The story of star-crossed love is a whole lot like Romeo and Juliet, but set in Hell's Kitchen and inspired by actual problems with gangs not inclined towards singing and dancing, "West Side Story" is one of those timeless classics that really gets New York. It also offers a somewhat hopeful look at what happens when a New York play about the city that never sleeps ends up on the silver screen.

Dog Day Afternoon. Crossing the bridge to Brooklyn might be beneath a whole lot of people from Manhattan, but this is one of the best films to involve the five boroughs, and the fact that it is based on a true story only proves true that old adage: New Yorkers are some seriously crazy people, outnumbered only by the sheer amount of locals who don't find anything particularly shocking. Al Pacino playing a Brooklyn bank robber who wins over his hostages and has some interesting real-life secrets makes use of the original surroundings where the real incident took place, and the action sequences and slow directing make this a treat to watch on satellite tv, no matter how many times it may have been seen before.

Manhattan. Expect to see every worthwhile landmark in the entire city, because Woody Allen definitely loves New York more than any leggy unconventionally beautiful women he was dating during the 1970s, when this film was made. A serious love story, the film manages to lovingly preserve a New York that is often in the minds of those singing the city's praises.

Do the Right Thing. Back to Brooklyn again, this Spike Lee film is based on the type of tensions that one can expect on the hottest day of the summer. Known for its groundbreaking soundtrack (it was the first time that some classic Public Enemy songs were heard) and great performances from some of Lee's favorite actors, this is one film that manages to depict New York not how people like to remember it, but how it actually is. One of many films on satellite tv at any given moment featuring Rosie Perez, too.
