Human Dental Structure And The Wisdom Teeth Removal

By:

The dentist suggests that you must remove you wisdom tooth and you begin to wonder why it needs to be done. But before we proceed to the process and necessity of the wisdom teeth removal, it would be beneficial to understand our dental structures.

The main purpose of existence of teeth is to help us eat and chew our food. To perform this activity, our teeth are of different shapes and structures so that they can perform specified roles. We have the incisors, the canines, the premolars, the molars, and the third molars. The incisors are those in the front which help biting. The canines are sharp for tearing food. The premolars are for grinding food and the molars, which appear about a year after the premolars, serve the same purpose. After these come the third molars. Such a tooth can be referred to as the wisdom tooth which may cause crowding of teeth in the mouth. This is one of the main reasons for wisdom teeth removal.

Healthcare experts have different schools of thought for the removal of the third molars. Some advocate that they must be kept intact while others suggest that this should not be done because they can cause dental difficulties. Although there are chances that the third molar teeth can prove to be helpful, it is also possible that they develop in an inappropriate position causing other problems like problems in biting of food. The bones in the mouth can be affected causing bone problems. Due to the unnatural positioning and disruption of the set pattern of arrangement of teeth, slight decay is possible.

Nevertheless, if your teeth have grown completely, are positioned in an appropriate manner and most importantly, you are able to maintain your dental hygiene then, you may not need to get them removed.

What is very peculiar about third molars is that they can grow in any fashion! Sometimes the jaw is not large enough to support their eruption. Sometime they may begin to appear in the far end of the mouth, not having enough space to grow properly. Such molars can even grow in the horizontal direction which is why the wisdom teeth removal becomes inevitable. They might get trapped with the jaws causing complications as they become larger in size.

Youngsters and young adults are advised to undergo an extraction as they can recover more easily from surgery and future problems can also be avoided this way.
