How Your Company Can Reduce Its Carbon Footprint

By:

The effects of global warming have many people concerned about their carbon footprint. While there are many things that can be done at home to lower your carbon footprint, have you considered how your company can reduce its carbon footprint? Most people spend a majority of their waking hours at work. The choices made at the office may have a larger impact than those we make on our own time.

Recycle and Reuse materials to reduce waste

In most areas today, recycling is easier than ever. Many waste management companies will gladly provide companies with special bins for recyclable materials. Special trucks have sorters so that you no longer have to divide waste into plastic, aluminum and paper. Just toss all recyclable materials into the bin and they will be sorted for you.

Do not forget that it is even better to reuse materials than to recycle them. If you are shipping materials consider reusing a cardboard box that was shipped to your office rather than purchasing a new one. Save shipping peanuts and packing materials for reuse. If you accumulate more than you can use, many shipping stores will take bags of clean packing material for reuse.

Choose energy efficient machines

Not all office machines are created equal. When choosing new or replacement machines, choose those are more energy efficient when possible. Ask for energy efficiency ratings for the machines you are considering purchasing.

Lower your energy consumption

Heating and air conditioning are two of the largest energy users. Consider turning thermostats down during the winter and up in the summer. A two-degree change in the right direction can make a large difference in the energy used. During the summer, fans can help employees to feel cooler even thought the thermostat is turned higher. If the building is not used during the night, consider a programmable thermostat that will automatically adjust to save even more energy.

Turn off lights when the building is unoccupied. Also, turn off printers, copiers and other office machines. Unplug phone chargers when not in use. Remember to turn off cell phones and laptops when they are not being used.

There are many other ways that you will be able to use less energy in your office. By asking how your company can reduce its carbon footprint, you are taking the first step to reduction. Do not stop with just asking however. Once you identify ways to reduce the footprint, take steps to implement a plan. Continue to review what you are doing and make changes as necessary.
