When it comes to self defense the more basic the better, so don't waste your time with complicated techniques that are hard to make work with a willing partner much less some violent attacker. That is why it is part of the Self Defense Training System and other quality systems. You should also keep in mind most of the population doesn't know how to fight even if they're aggressive and willing to fight most of them don't know what the hell they're doing. So if you want to be able to defend yourself effectively in a fight you need to train, because training gives you an advantage over the majority of the population. If you learn how to properly throw an edge of hand strike you will be able to end a fight brutally and quickly without getting hurt.

Now you're probably asking yourself why shouldn't I learn those wrist grabs and other fancy techniques, because after you've seen accomplished martial artists do them at demonstrations and even in films. Well film can make anyone look good and if you're watching a demonstration whoever the technique is being done on is letting it happen to them.

That isn't to say it doesn't work, but if someone comes up to you and grabs your wrist you'll probably start pulling away and hitting them until they let go of you. Also if you're in the middle of a fight do you think you will be able to pull off a complicated technique while someone is hitting you? Be honest the answer is no, and most creditable martial artists will tell you the same thing, and that is why they aren't included in the training system.

So, you know what won't work in a fight, but you need to know what will work. The karate chop, the judo chop, and whatever else you want to call it has been around for a long time, and that is because it works. You can do damage with a fist, but your less likely to hurt you hand with an edge of hand (boxing gloves weren't just invented so you wouldn't hurt your opponent). When it comes to the human body the edge of hand maximizes damage while letting you protect yourself and keep fighting. It doesn't matter if they have a weapon or they're throwing a punch you can fight back.

To get started have your training partner come after you with a pad in hand. They should end up in the space where you were standing while you should be moving out of the way off to the side. Once you step out of the way you should than strike them with the edge of hand. Now this sounds like a simple drill and it is, but when you're in a real street fight your attacker's first move is to throw a punch, but you step to the empty space on your left and he moves right past you. This will leave him exposed to hits on the side of his neck and head.

You just took the first step to winning the fight and it is bases for more advanced self defense training. A technique doesn't need to be complicated to work, but it has to be effective.
