How Well Do You Care For Your Family Dog

By:

There is no doubt about it, people love their dogs. Some families treat their dog like they are just as much a member as anyone else. This might seem a little ridiculous for anyone that does not really love dogs, but for those that do, it is almost unavoidable. The family dog is as American as apple pie. They are petted and pampered just like a human. They get special food, their own toys and their own bed. If they do not get their way, many of them will sulk and pout just like a child. They have even been known to throw temper tantrums just to get what they want.

It is fine and well to spoil your pet with new toys and lots of hugs, but when it comes to their health and well being, you have to be just as attentive. There are so many illnesses and diseases that your family dog can get. Many of them you might not have even heard of, but your veterinarian will tell you they have to be protected from them. Make no mistake, it can get expensive when you have your dog tested and vaccinated against all of the things they should be, but you could be very sorry if you do not.

The best thing to do is to begin making routine visits to your veterinarian as soon as you get a new puppy or even an older dog. Newly weaned puppies will often have worms if they have not been treated for them by the breeder or owner of the mother dog. The immunity a puppy has from the mother will not prevent them from getting certain types of worms and medication is required to remove them or prevent them. Besides worming your puppy, they will need to begin their first vaccinations against more serious things as soon as six weeks old.

Along with making sure your dog has had all of the vaccinations they need according to your veterinarian, you will want to make sure their diet is what it should be as well. Although dog owners can be tempted to feed their pet people food, it is not a good idea. Even a one time special treat can cause digestive upset that could lead to a trip to the vet. Giving them foods that they are not accustomed to could lead to vomiting and diarrhea. It usually is not that serious, but if they proved to be allergic, it could even be fatal.

Even when you do everything by the book as far as keeping your dog healthy, there is the matter of their safety too. You must always take special care with your dog when they are on the outside. If you live in a congested area, a leash is essential. Even a moment running free could mean their death if they run in front of a car. You must watch your dog closely even at dog parks to prevent them from being attacked by another dog. Dogs are as inquisitive as children, especially puppies, so inside the home you must keep them away from electrical cords and anything that could be poisonous to them. Caring for your family dog the same as you would a child will help ensure they live a long and healthy life.
