How Vinyl Siding Can Reduce Home Maintenance

By:

When looking to do any upgrades on your house, you should always start with the ones that will save you money in the long run. If you can do something now that will increase your value and cut down on maintenance later, then that would be the wise choice.

Years ago wood was a popular choice for siding and is still found on a lot of homes today. Wood makes a great surface for protecting a home, but that does come with a cost. Wood is very high maintenance because it needs to be sealed and protected to keep it from rotting and decaying. Depending on the type of wood it may be painted perhaps from a previous homeowner. Painted wood will be susceptible to mold and mildew and will need to be washed and re-painted every so often. Keeping up with wood maintenance on a home can be very time consuming and expensive.

Another popular choice for house siding back in the day was aluminum. Aluminum was first introduced as "maintenance free." It may have been somewhat easier to take care of compared to wood but it was anything but maintenance free. It was however more versatile, easier to hang, and could be washed without having to be painted. It also came in many different colors. The color, or paint, was baked onto the shiny looking aluminum to give the homeowner the color they wanted.

The problem with aluminum siding was found out after years of sun exposure; the paint would become oxidized leaving a chalky residue and a dull faded look. This was not ideal so they began looking at yet another alternative; that is how vinyl siding came to be.

A great alternative to wood and aluminum is vinyl siding. Vinyl is very low maintenance and very durable. When taken care of can last for years, should never need painted, and comes in an array of colors and types. Vinyl will need washed every so often but the time and cost involved in having this done is minimal compared to that of wood. Vinyl will long out last aluminum and when maintained will look good for years to come.

Something else to consider with vinyl is that when doing any adding on or remodeling, the siding is very easy to work with. For example, if for some reason you have to tear into an exterior wall, the contractor can easily remove the siding, do what he needs to do, and then re-installed the vinyl unharmed and to know ones knowledge that it was ever removed.

Another great benefit and reduction of maintenance is that if you were to ever add on to your home, new siding can be installed on the new addition and blended right in to the old vinyl. This is harder to do and more noticeable once it is done with wood or aluminum.

Low maintenance means lower costs to the homeowner. Easy to work with, more versatile and cheaper also means less money for the homeowner. If you are still on the fence about the lower maintenance of vinyl just take a look at an older home with aluminum or wood siding. Old aluminum is almost always dull looking, chalky, oxidized, dented, and scratched. Wood may have rotten spots, chipping paint, and mildew.

Another thing you may not have realized is that if you have aluminum now and are considering vinyl, you can actually take your aluminum to a recycling center, once it has been ripped off the house, and turn it in for cash to help offset the cost of the new vinyl siding. So if you are looking to save money on maintenance vinyl is the best choice. It will give your home hassle free protection, will increase its value, and will look beautiful for many years.
