How Varicose Veins Stockings Could Have Helped My Great Grandma

My poor great grandma. I can remember overhearing a very depressing conversation at a very young age. She told my mother about her time on the vaudeville dance circuit. She talked about her gorgeous long legs. "Gams" she called them. She had danced her way into the hearts of thousands. She appeared in magazine spreads and even had a brief part in an early Bing Crosby film as a dancing girl. She showed those "gams" off around the country and was paid(relatively) well for it. She spoke to my mother wistfully about those times. About the beauty of her youth. About feeling great in a short skirt. Over the conversation the sadness seemed to deepen and become more entrenched, it became clear that my great grandmother felt terrible about how her body had aged.

I felt so sad for her. She spoke of the varicose veins that now lined her legs and of the pain caused by the lack of blood flow to her lower appendages. I do not know if varicose veins stockings or compression hose were around at this point(it was the late 70's I will say without revealing my age) but I really wish they had existed or if they did that some kind and informed soul would have told her about them. It is hard to accept the limits of one's beauty, especially where the ravages of age are concerned.

Had my great grandmother been offered the opportunity to wear Jobst support socks or really any sort of compression socks she would have probably been able to feel better about herself. At the very least those specialty socks would relieve some of the discomfort caused by a lack of blood flow to the legs.

Compression hose are not something I have any experience with, yet. Hopefully I never do but if my family history is any indication I will most likely at some point be faced with varicose veins. Lucky for me, and especially lucky for my mother and grandmother both of whom already wear them, compression socks exist. Science really knocked it out of the park when they realized how important maintaining a woman's legs was. They pin pointed the problem and figured out innovative ways to help combat these issues.

I am so glad we live in a world with compression hose. When I listen back to that conversation I eaves dropped on so many years ago I think "that could have eventually been me." I feel for you Great Granny, I really do.
