How Uv Visible Spectrophotometers Are Used In The Lab

By:

There are many pieces of laboratory equipment out there, some of them more complicated than others. Luckily the UV visible Spectrophotometer is one of the more simple ones to understand in terms of its functionality and main objectives. Basically its sole purpose is to measure the intensity of light after passing through a sample. As you can probably imagine, there are a number of different uses for this type of device and we cover some of the fundamental applications here.

Many people tend to believe that these devices are only used in physics settings. Believe it or not, these products can be used in biochemistry and even forensics. It is probably one of the most widely used pieces of equipment in any industry, or at least in the applied sciences area.

Let me explain the analytical process in very simple terms. When a compound is placed within the device, it is bathed with light, and the intensity of that light is measured as it passes through the sample. Once the intensity is determined, a calculation on the amount of light that has passed through will be made. Essentially, the less light that passes through the sample, the more absorbent it is.

In addition to that, it can also be used for determining the actual density of a material. For instance if you have a piece of metal or wood that might be used in the construction of a building, it is a good idea to determine how dense it is and whether or not it would hold up under pressure.

The parts that make up these devices are very simple. For instance you would have a sample holder, a light source, and a monochromator. There is also a radiation source, as this is one method of testing a material. Typically a deuterium lamp would be utilized for this purpose.

When it comes to these devices, you should know that there are two very different types. First of all, there is the single beam spectrophotometer. This device will simply be able to measure the light intensity of the beam. The double beam can split the light source into two beams, providing a much more accurate test result.

The type that you choose to utilize will of course be up to you, and it often comes down to available resources and necessity, as well as the type of application you need it for. Remember that while these are expensive, you could choose to rent your laboratory equipment rather than buying it. In the current economic climate there are more and more suppliers offering leasing deals or packages where you can spread payments over time.

Just keep in mind that you need to look for the best products for the job as well as a good deal. It is all very well buying a cheap instrument but will it give you accurate results. Most importantly, do not lease outdated and very old looking equipment. If you are buying these products outright, you could choose to buy older used equipment with up to date functionality to get you by until such time as you can buy brand new.

So long as you remember these rather basic pointers, you will be able to obtain a spectrophotometer for just about any use you can imagine at a decent price.
