How To Write Travel Articles That Sell!

How To Write Travel Articles That Sell!

By:

1)Start small.

It doesnt matter if you cant travel. Sure, you might think that you live in a boring place, but, just imagine what people in the deserts of the Sahara or in the Arctic would find interesting about where you live.

An example: You live in the middle of nowhere on a farm. What would somebody living in the city find interesting? The silence, the sound of birds singing, the clear sky at night, the lack of pollution and the abundance of animal life are some possibilities. These differences give you focus or an angle (the technical word that journalists use) to work with.

2)Engage the senses.

Travel writing is about escapism. Use your senses. Your readers might be stuck in a stuffy bus or reading on their lunch break during a stressful day at work. Take them somewhere, its your duty! Travel writing is the perfect medium for sights, sounds, colours and smells. Its the most artistic form of journalistic writing.

3)Hit hard.

Use the first sentence to make an impact and capture the readers attention. Keep it short, the journalists rule of thumb is no more than 25 words.

4)Read aloud.

Read your whole story out aloud. It will give you a different perspective and help to iron out kinks of grammar and phrasing.

5)Conclude.

Wrapping up the article with reference to your first few lines is always a good idea. An example:

First line: The Statue of Liberty spread its arms high above me.
Last line: As I left New York, I imagined the Statue of Liberty giving me one, final farewell.

Not the best example, but you get the idea.

6)Learn how to take good photographs.

When you want to get published, you will need to have photographs to go with your article. Learn how to take photographs. If I can give you one, very basic tip, it is this: Use the thirds rule. Try and balance things by imaging that the viewfinder (where you look through to take the photo) is divided into thirds, both horizontally and vertically. Editors want articles with good photos so they dont have to waste time looking for them themselves. And you will get paid extra for the photos!

I hope this has given you some direction. Be sure to check out my blog full of interesting, offbeat travel stories!
