How To Wear Jeans

By:

As a bloke it can be far too easy to rely on jeans as part of your staple wardrobe, but theyre not always an appropriate choice. This guide should help you decipher when to opt for jeans and when not to, plus a few extra jeans buying tips to help you find your perfect pair. First off we must classify jeans into 3 categories.

Smart
Smart jeans are usually a dark dye, preferably ironed and intact. If they are ripped then these must be fashionable rips that are intended to be there rather than a custom job. Black and indigo straight or bootleg jeans are the perfect choice for your smarter pair.

Casual
Bootleg jeans, lighter wash styles and twisted jeans all fall into this category. You can also get away with a few impromptu rips and weathered areas, however, they shouldnt look too different from when they were new, just a little more worn in.

Wrecked
Reserved for painting, DIY and work in the garden these jeans should never be seen in company. Once youre missing buttons or there is more rip than denim its time to wear them purely for manual labour or donate them to the rubbish bin.

Now you know where your jeans fit into things we can discuss how or when to wear them.

Smart jeans are a minimum requirement for any evening or smart-casual function. These should be worn almost exclusively with smart shoes and look good with a shirt and belt. They are also a good choice for activities like shopping, going to the pub or meeting friends/ family.

Casual jeans fit into most other categories and can be worn on a sliding scale. The closer jeans are to the wrecked state, the more casual they become. For example, paintball with the lads should be the domain of jeans closer to wrecked than smart, whilst less casual pairs are still good for lunch at the pub or watching football.

Choosing the right footwear

Jeans should be worn with sports shoes in the most casual of circumstances. Unless absolutely necessary trainers should be avoided, if you prefer them for comfort then opt for a leather pair or a trainer/ shoe style that is a little smarter. Canvas trainers also look better than sportier styles.

Smart Jeans Staple Look

Wear smart jeans with a polo shirt, v neck jumper, shoes and a leather belt for a basic smarter look that shows you take care of your appearance without being too trendy this is a good staple look to have in your wardrobe and is always a good choice for seeing the parents, in-laws, or a family dinner.

Casual look

It can be difficult to portray a casual look without being scruffy or student like. For a stylish casual look, wear a pair of smarter casual jeans with a long sleeve v-neck, canvas trainers or leather shoes and smarter accessories. This outfit is ideal for having a few lunchtime drinks with the lads.

Again, only opt for your scruffiest pair if it really doesnt matter how you look! Any smarter occasion requires trousers rather than jeans; jeans just arent smart enough. To push your smart jeans that little bit further opt for a black pair with a straight leg, these are less noticeable than blue dye of more loosely cut styles.
