How To Wear Cufflinks - Tips To Wear Your Cuff Links

By:

First you must have a formal shirt that does not have buttons on the sleeve, in the place where the cufflinks are supposed to go. You may laugh at how stupid that sounds by there has been an occasion where the groomsmen, at a not so formal wedding, were asked to wear their own dark suit and a white shirt. Upon arrival at the event, they were all given matching cufflinks as a gift from the groom to wear during the wedding ceremony only to find that their normal shirts would not accommodate them.

No one wanted to look stupid about not having worn a shirt that would accommodate proper cufflinks, or make the groom embarrassed for giving such an utterly useless gift. The solution? Yes, we all did use scissors to cut the buttons off of the cuffs of our shirts and to punch holes in those cuffs to allows the cufflinks to be used in the proper places.

Let's assume instead that you have a proper formal shirt, the kind that is designed to accept cufflinks. As far as the mechanics go, there are two basic kinds of cufflinks. The post kind that has a metal rod you insert through the two matching holes of your cuffs and then once inserted you flip the hinged part at the end of the rod into a perpendicular position thereby securing the two pieces of your cuffs in place. It is a bit like a fish hook, when once set, it cannot be reversed or moved out of position easily without human intervention. Sounds good right? You look down at your sleeve that is properly portraying itself just enough to show your cufflinks. They sparkle and they look great from your point of view.

But what do they look like to another if you happen to raise your arms in some gesture? Like throwing rice at a wedding for example. Everyone else sees the other side of the cufflink as a bent piece of metal with no sparkle at all. It may be a minor detail, but there is another basic style of cufflinks that addresses this problem. They cost about the same and if you really want to be properly dressed you will choose them instead.

They are called chain cuff links because a small piece of chain connects the two pieces that are completely finished on both sides with all the same sparkle. With the chain style cufflinks it does not matter whether you arm is raised or not. They present themselves from the top or the bottom as finished pieces and the image is the same. With chain style cufflinks you have a finished look on both sides. For the discriminating gentleman that is preferable.

Here is the fun part. You are allowed freedom of choice in the color and finish of cufflinks. The most popular and fashionable styles are made of either gold or silver bases with maybe some stone like onyx for the circular surface. If you are wearing formal attire and also using shirt studs instead of buttons on your shirts make sure the cufflinks match the shirt studs. Chose a theme that works for you and you have quite a bit of freedom of choice which makes choosing cufflinks and wearing them a very enjoyable part of being well dressed.
