How To Use Local Transportation When At A Spanish School In Lima

By:

When you are in Lima, it only makes sense to explore the city. If you are attending a Spanish immersion program in Peru, one of the main benefits you will find is the lost cost of public transportation. There is so much to do and so much to see including architecture, parks, special event, and, of course, the oceans and mountains. You can get around the city quite easily, and on a student's budget. It is highly recommended to find a Spanish school in Lima that is located in Miraflores. The good news is that this part of town is easy to explore through walking. There is certainly nothing like getting some exercise and exploring Lima by foot. Plus, Miraflores has a wide variety of restaurants, nightlife options, parks and shopping centers. However, it can be challenging to get to more distant points in the city.

Of course, you can always take a taxi for fairly cheap prices. A typical taxi ride within the city will range between $2-$10. This cost is made even cheaper when you share a taxi with new friends that you met in your Spanish immersion program in Peru. However, in rush hour, you may find the taxis to be a bit slow. Feel free to opt for alternatives in the way of public transportation.

One easy way to explore the city is through the Lima Metro. Locals call this mode of transportation "Tren Eléctrico." This is a very new development in the city. This train uses energy from hydroelectric power stations. While building of this train began in 1997, it is not yet fully operational. However, if your trip is scheduled for after July 2011, the Lima Metro should be up and running. It will run for a 7.3-mile span with 4 main lines, and additional routes are scheduled for the near future.

Lima is also opening up a brand new bus system called the Metropolitano. This bus will go from North to South Lima and pass through the downtown district. There will be approximately 600 buses that are operational. One notable feature of the Metropolitano is that these are the first Latin American buses to use natural gas. You can pay for this form of transportation through smart cards.

With 9 million residents, Lima is South America's fifth largest city. The entire urban area covers about 310 square miles. Clearly, there is a lot to do, see and explore. When you attend Spanish school in Lima, you should experience all that the city has to offer. Don't be intimidated by the city's transportation options. Not only is it state-of-the art, it will get you to all the places that you wish to explore.
