How To Use A Guillotine To Cut A Cigar

By:

Cigars can provide a wonderful, fragrant smoking experience. However, cutting the cap from the cigar can pose a problem, particularly for first-time smokers, as well as some who've been doing it incorrectly for years. Before you slice the cap and apply a Colibri lighter to the cigar, you should first know how to go about cutting it. A guillotine cigar cutter is the most common type of cutter used, though there are several other styles on the market. How do you use this type of cutter?

First, you'll need to examine the cigar's cap. Quite a few first time smokers try to cut the cigar at the bottom of the cap (as far down the cigar's barrel as possible). However, this can lead to tearing and when you light up that Colibri lighter, you'll have a less-than perfect smoking experience. You only want to cut about 1/8th of an inch from the cigar, which makes the cut just beyond the tip of the cap. Remember, all you are attempting to do is to expose the filler (the tobacco) so that the flame can provide an even light.

Now that you know how far to cut, you'll need to know how to cut it. The guillotine cutter is a pretty simple device. A single blade sits within the housing, usually surmounted by a finger hole (sometimes two). When you push the blade, it slices through the cap of the cigar, allowing you to strike that Colibri lighter and enjoy a wonderful, relaxing smoke. However, using a single blade cutter can be tough. You will have to use force and speed (a quick, hard cut) to ensure that the blade slices cleanly through the cap and does not tear the wrapper. A torn wrapper leads to a bad experience and can ruin your cigar.

If you find that you have trouble operating a single blade guillotine, you can opt for a double bladed affair, or even a spring-loaded guillotine. These are generally preferable (with the spring-loaded model being superior) to a single blade cutter. The benefit is that these allow you to apply less force, but still achieve a straight, clean cut. Then, it's just a matter of finding your favorite Colibri lighter, striking it and savoring the experience of smoking a fine cigar. You'll find a wide variety of cutters available that can help you achieve the best smoke.
