Just like many other species the crappie uses structures to hide out and look for food. Many anglers define structures as brushpiles, trees, stumps, weed beds, rocks, Lilly pads and so forth and this is where the crappie will be the most abundant. Basically, anywhere the baitfish can grow and thrive that can also provide cover is an excellent place to seek out the crappie. Structures can be natural or man-made because it really doesn't make any difference to the fish. They are naturally drawn to anywhere they can use as shelter and where there is food.

This is why some anglers create their own underwater structures in areas where they fish personally. It's also why the department of natural resources will create these structures in many counties. It helps to ensure the population of many species by providing them with a habitat in which they can grow and thrive. Structures can also be defined as the physical feature of the bottom of the lake or river that you're fishing in. This would be the areas where the contours of the bottom changes creating different depths. Some underwater structures include ledges, drop-offs, humps, holes and sandbars.

Fishing around structures can be a little difficult because it's easy to get your line tangled up. It's not at all uncommon to have to cut your line and start over. Of course, this means losing the tackle at the end of the line. In some cases, it's not a big deal. However, when it was your favorite lure on the end of that line it can get a little frustrating. Finding the structure is half the battle and that is where modern technology steps in to lend a helping hand. Using electronics can help you locate the underwater structure much easier and faster. Using a fish finder will let you know if the area is populated or vacant so you'll know whether or not to take the time to try and fish the area.

When fishing structures using jigs is your best option because they are so versatile and the crappies are highly attracted to them. Work the jig along the bottom of the water and around the edge of the structure and the nearby area. The fish are not always right in the center of the structure so do a little exploring.

Many times the crappie will be suspended above the bottom near a structure but keeping the same depth as the top of the structure. This is why you'll need to explore and search the surrounding area as well. After exploring the area around the structure, then you can move in closer and fish off of it.
