The types of depression that exist run from mild to chronic, and may go undiagnosed if medical attention is not sought out.

If you are, education is the key to help you to understand, which will give you the ability to cope with your condition. It is important to know that you are not alone and there is help.

Depression is characterized by negative emotions such as low self-esteem and feelings of hopelessness. It can cause you to sleep more that is normal and can also induce mood swings.

One week you are happy as a lark, and the next week you are so down in the dumps you can't even get out of bed. These and other symptoms may indicate depression.

Types of depression:

Unipolar depression:

This is the most common form and is indicated by all the major symptoms. This form of depression will usually last for around six months and falls under the clinical depression classification.

Bipolar depressive disorder:

This form of depression is also known as manic depressive disorder, with feelings swinging wildly between highs and lows.

This form of depression is chronic and its treatment will be required for the rest of your life. Suffering from this form of depression does not necessarily limit you from leading a normal life. Symptoms can include:

Requiring less sleep. Feelings of invincibility and an inflated sense of self. Rapid speech and periods of extreme talkativeness. An increased propensity towards impulsiveness with a reckless sexuality. Irrationality with regards to finances.

Dysthymia:

This depression is a more mild version that will last for two years or longer. Throughout its course, there can be more major episodes of depression.

Atypical Depression: Is most often seen in women and is characterized by eating too much, sleeping for long periods, panic attacks, and very sensitive emotionally.

Psychotic Depression: Is a severe type of depression. The person may hear voices and see visions that are not real. There are also periods of delusional thoughts.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): This is cyclical in nature and tends to be worse in the winter months. It is believed to be related to the levels of sunlight.

Common symptoms of depression include:

- Easily agitated.

- Change in appetite, resulting in weight gain or loss.

- Difficulty concentrating.

- Flat affect - No facial expressions.

- Excessive tiredness.

- Feelings of hopelessness, loss of self worth and helplessness.

- Feelings of self-hate and misplaced guilt.

- Withdrawal from life's daily activities that were previously enjoyed.

- Obsession with death or consideration of suicide.

- Insomnia.

- Oversleeping.

- Loss of sex drive.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of depression or think you may be depressed, contact your doctor immediately for consultation and testing for depression.

If you have been diagnosed with depression, it is important for you to realize that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Your condition can be treated and normalcy can be returned to your life.
